You are cordially
invited to participate in the 2008 KM Expo: Mobilizing Knowledge for
Community-Based Research. This event has been organized by the Knowledge
Mobilization (KM) Unit at York University, in partnership with the Human
Services Planning Coalition of York Region.
What is KM?
We believe
that knowledge has greater value when it is shared and implemented.
Knowledge Mobilization is the active, two-way exchange of information
and expertise between knowledge creators and knowledge users. The KM
unit at York University connects university researchers with
community and government organizations to support the use of research
in decision-making about social programming, public policy, and professional
practice.
Why an Expo?
The Expo will
celebrate the successes of KM partnerships made between York University
and York Region to date while engaging KM stakeholders in planning future
collaborations. We hope to create a space where community and academic
stakeholders can meet and interact. There will be presentations by keynote
speakers, concurrent workshops, follow-up breakout sessions to our KM
in the AM events, a chance to meet the Summer 2007 York University KM
Intern Students and opportunities for discussion and networking.
For more information about
knowledge mobilization at York University, please visit www.researchimpact.ca or contact us at kmunit@yorku.ca.

Director
Search
YORK UNIVERSITY
DIRECTOR
Centre for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean
Applications
and nominations are invited for the position of Director of the Centre
for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean (CERLAC), for a term
of three to five years, to begin July 1, 2008.
CERLAC is a University-based Organized Research Unit reporting to the Office of the Vice-President, Research & Innovation. The Centre was established in 1978 and is Canada’s largest interdisciplinary research centre on Latin America and the Caribbean. CERLAC is an interdisciplinary research unit concerned with the economic development, political and social organization, and cultural contributions of Latin America and the Caribbean. The Centre works to build academic and cultural links between these regions and Canada; to inform researchers, policy advisors and the public on matters concerning the regions; and to assist in the development of research and teaching institutions that directly benefit the peoples of the region. CERLAC’s programs enjoy the support and participation of research institutions throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.
Applicants are expected to be members of the full-time faculty at York University, and to have a distinguished record of scholarship and interdisciplinary research interests in the area of Latin America and the Caribbean. The Director is expected to administer the financial, organizational and academic activities of the Centre, to develop external funding sources, and to maintain an active individual and collaborative research program. The successful applicant will receive an administrative stipend and the appropriate course load reduction as stipulated by the YUFA Collective Agreement. The Director of the Centre reports to the Associate Vice-President Research (Social Sciences and Humanities).
Applications
and nominations (including curriculum vitae and the names of three referees
who may be contacted) should be sent to Phyllis Lepore Babcock, Executive
Officer, Research, Office of the Vice-President Research & Innovation,
200 York Lanes. Applicants are also asked to submit a statement
about their vision for the Centre including goals, objectives, strategy
of action and leadership style. Applications and nominations must
be received by January 7, 2008.
DEADLINE:
January 7, 2008.
3) York Seminar for Advanced Research
This notice
is for all full time faculty members.
The York Seminar
for Advanced Research (YSAR) is a year-long seminar which provides a
forum in which a small group of scholars working in closely related
fields can consult extensively on a particular theme. The Seminar
aims to foster, in an appropriate environment, informal yet deep discussion,
exploration of the limits of specialized fields, and enduring professional
and intellectual contacts. Interdisciplinarity and collaboration is
encouraged.
Typically,
a Seminar will consist of 9-12 scholars from York and the Toronto vicinity
who meet as a working group at least twice a month for the entire academic
year. The topic of focus generally transcends narrow specialization
and involves more than one discipline. Members of the Seminar
must be scholars whose training, interests, and professional records
hold out promise of substantive contribution to research and to Seminar
participation. All members are expected to attend sessions regularly.
It is expected
that the Seminar will be able to attract visitors for varying periods
of time in order to participate. Seminar participation will ordinarily
be restricted to members, invited visitors, and a research assistant.
Plans for the Seminar may incorporate a shared meal in order to prolong
meaningful exchange and strengthen the intellectual bonding and convivial
collegiality of the working group.
A condition
of the Seminar is that a volume or similar form of dissemination (such
as a website), embodying the proceedings of the Seminar, be submitted
for publication at the end of the year, acknowledging all financial
support received. An alternative or complementary result would be an
external research funding proposal that would extend and deepen the
research begun under the auspices of the Seminar. A full report
on the Seminar is also expected by the Office of the Associate Vice-President
(Research).
Seminar organizers will receive $7,500 towards the operation of the Seminar from the Office of the Vice-President Research and Innovation. Additional funds needed to run a successful seminar must be generated by the organizers by means of external grants. Organizers may wish to negotiate an appropriate course release with their respective Deans, but such release time is not guaranteed and cannot be paid for from the YSAR.
Proposals must
provide as much information as possible about the structure of the proposed
Seminar. They should identify to the extent possible the potential
group of scholars who will participate both as members and as visitors
and indicate their professional stature as recognized through publications
and other achievements. A detailed budget for the Seminar is an
important part of the proposal and will be approved by the Office of
the Vice-President Research & Innovation. Details of all additional
monies expected should be given.
Proposals for
Seminars should be submitted to the Office of the Vice-President Research
and Innovation addressed to Chandra Persaud, 200 York Lanes, cpersaud@yorku.ca.
Please note that a hard copy must be received by the application deadline
and email attachment must be sent at least three days before the deadline.

10) CIHR Genetics (Ethics, Law and Society)
Description:
The Institute of Genetics wishes to fund applications that address ethical, legal and social issues relevant to the design, conduct and dissemination of genomic and genetic research; development and application of technologies, and their integration into society. Suggested research areas include:
Background:
This RFA is designed to stimulate and promote research from many different disciplines into the ethical, legal and social issues relevant to population-based genetic research. Many of these issues remain under-explored, particularly in the Canadian context.
Around the
world, population-based genetic research is fast emerging as an important
area of investigation, and Canada is well placed to be a leader in this
field. Our public health care system, the emergence of increasingly
comprehensive health information databanks, our strong and vibrant genetics
research community, and the existence of several unique populations
combine to make Canada an ideal place to do this important work.
Value:
CIHR's contribution to the amount available for this initiative is subject to availability of funds voted annually to CIHR by parliamentary appropriations, and the conditions that may be attached to them.
This RFA is designed to solicit small development grant applications for research projects that meet one or both of the following two objectives:
In this RFA, the term "research"
includes both original investigation and systematic consolidation of
previous research and analysis.
