Metcalf Foundation: Request for Proposals re: Poverty Statistics
Deadline: Friday, July 11, 2008
The Metcalf Foundation recently announced a Request for Proposals to conduct a review of poverty statistics and measurement instruments of interest in Ontario.  The Foundation is interested in undertaking research to unpack the existing debates around poverty measurements.
Value: approximately $37,000 including research, plain language editing of the report and report layout and design. Duration: work to commence August 2008; final report by April 2009 on a best efforts basis.

Objectives

To conduct a review of poverty statistics and measurement instruments of interest in Ontario  in order to provide a roadmap to navigate differing poverty related claims  and measures, their strengths and weaknesses, what they do and do not do and their relative statistical validity.  A second purpose is to make clear how and why statistics differ through the creation of a framework that reveals the common errors made in comparison, how they get made, and how to ensure that comparisons are made properly (i.e. apples to apples).  It is expected that the review will be of use to other provinces and territories who are undertaking similar studies.
