1) SSHRC Information Session

The Office of Research Services (ORS)
is coordinating a SSHRC Information Session for those faculty members who
are in the process of preparing or are considering preparing an application
to this Fall’s SSHRC Standard Research Grant competition (deadline
October 15). Further details on the Information Session can be
found below.
To assist ORS in planning this session, please confirm your attendance
by sending an email to research@yorku.ca
or by calling ext. 55055.
This is a general information session that will be of interest to both
new and returning applicants to SSHRC’s Standard Research Grants Program.
This session will be led by ORS staff and Professor Heather Lotherington,
a Grant Selection Committee member from the Faculty of Education.
In addition to a general overview of the program guidelines and the application
forms, best practices and useful tips for producing successful applications
will be discussed. Useful information regarding the SSHRC adjudication
process will also be presented.

2) CIHR
Information Session

The Office of Research Services (ORS)
is coordinating a CIHR Information Session (see below for time and location)
for those faculty members who are in the process of or considering preparing
an application to upcoming CIHR or other Operating and Strategic/Open competitions
with registration deadline of August 15 for the open operating grants
competition and even earlier for some strategic competitions. The
Office of Research Services is pleased to invite all interested investigators
to an information session regarding grant applications to the Canadian
Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). This session is intended to provide
researchers a general overview of the granting council, its peer review
process, and some tips on how to write a successful application.
The session will be led by:
Prof. Ron Pearlman
Department of Biology, Faculty of Science & Engineering and
CIHR Delegate for York University
AND
Prof. Sarah Flicker, Faculty of Environmental Studies
Prof. Pearlman will discuss process
and procedures relevant to preparing and submitting CIHR grants, and proposal
writing including how to prepare for peer review. Specific strategies
for a successful application will be discussed to assist first time applicants
who may not be familiar with CIHR, current grant holders applying for additional
funds, and previously unsuccessful applicants who are re-submitting. Prof.
Flicker will discuss specific strategies and matters from the perspectives
of applicants submitting proposals in social science and humanities areas
of health research.
CIHR funds research in all areas of health research and this session will
be of interest to researchers in all areas, from biomedical, to social
science and humanities, to clinical.

Information Session

is coordinating an NSERC Information Session for those faculty members
who are in the process of preparing an application to this Fall’s NSERC
Discovery Grant competition (deadline November 1).
To assist in planning this session,
please confirm your attendance by sending an email to research@yorku.ca

This session is considered useful to new faculty members and to those submitting
an NSERC Discovery Grant application.
David Hood, a Grant Selection Committee
member from the School of Kinesiology & Health Science at York University
will join us to share his experience and knowledge of the application and
adjudication process.
ORS staff will also give a general overview of the guidelines and application
form, will speak to the effective preparation and submission of Discovery
Grant applications as well as present the characteristics common to successful
applications.
