Institute for Work & Health short research course:
Intervention Mapping:  Developing and Evaluating Theory and Evidence-Based Programs
July 21 & 22, 2008, 9am - 4pm

Professor Nell Gottlieb, Professor of Health Education at the University of Texas at Austin and co-author of Health Promotion Planning: An Intervention Mapping Approach, will be presenting an introductory course on Intervention Mapping. All registrants will receive a copy of the book. This course is for both researchers and non-researchers interested in the evaluation of program interventions. After two days, you will have a basic knowledge of intervention mapping tools and be able to engage in project-based intervention mapping. Click here for more information.

The National Collaborating Centres (NCCs) for Public Health and the Public Health Agency of Canada:  3rd Annual Summer Institute in KSTE
August 5 - 7, 2008 in Kelowna, BC

Knowledge synthesis, translation, and exchange (KSTE) is a key mandate for the NCCs for Public Health. This conference will focus on research, education, implementation, and evaluation within the emerging science of KSTE and will highlight a range of initiatives that exemplify KSTE in action in the six public health areas of the NCCs: Aboriginal Health, Determinants of Health, Environmental Health, Healthy Public Policy, Infectious Disease, and Methods and Tools. York Incentive Grants (VPRI) Deadline Aug 1 (also March 1, 2008)
Support for grant proposal preparation particularly (but not exclusively) for collaborative teams and only for grants submitted to non-traditional sources (non Tri Council). Value: Approximately $5,000.

SSHRC Grant in Aid of Travel (ORS) Deadline Aug 1 (also Nov 1, Feb1, May 1)
Funding to full-time faculty members for foreign travel (i.e., outside Canada, US and US posessions) for which the applicant is giving a paper or making a substantial presentation. One travel award per indvididual, per year. Value: Up to the cost of return minimum airfare.

SSHRC: Aid to Scholarly Journals Program Deadline June 30, 2008
Applications are currently being accepted for this SSHRC program which helps defray the costs of publishing scholarly articles, assists with distributions and supports journals in their transition to digital media. Value: up to $30,000 per year for three years.

Work and Learning Knowledge Centre (WLKC): Open Call for Knowledge Exchange or Synthesis Research Projects in the Work and Learning Domain Deadline no later than 30 June 2008 at 5pm EST
The Call for Proposals includes instructions about how to submit a proposal. Please note that all projects that receive funding must submit final deliverable by November 30, 2008. Value: up to $20,000.

Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA): Food Safety Research Program 2008-09 Call for Proposals Deadlines Letters of Intent – Friday, July 18, 2008 at 4pm; Formal Application – November 2008 (by invitation only)
The OMAFRA Food Safety Research Program commissions food safety research to support the implementation of an enhanced, science-based food safety system in Ontario. Value: up to $100,000 for six months to two years.

Canadian Tobacco Control Research Initiative (CTCRI):  Research Planning Grants Deadlines August 31, November 30, February 28 and May 30
The purpose of this grant is to bring together new, multi-sectoral and interdisciplinary research teams to construct research proposals for submission to traditional open funding competitions. Value: up to $15,000 for one year.

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC): Discovery Grants Fall 2008  - Notification of Intent to Apply (Form 180) Deadline for Notification of Intent to Apply is August 1, 2008
The Office of Research Services (ORS) would like to remind researchers who are considering applying for a NSERC Discovery Grant (Deadline: November 1, 2008) to complete the Notification of Intent to Apply (Form 180) which is due at NSERC by August 1, 2008.

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC):  Request for Proposals (RFP) for the Inter-American Collaboration in Materials Research (CIAM) Initiative Deadlines August 29, 2008 – Letter of Intent for Research Projects; August 29, 2008 – Free form letter or e-mail for Collaborative Mobility Grants; November 28, 2008 – Application
This funding opportunity is for collaborative activities in materials research among investigators from Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago and the United States. As part of this Request for Proposals, NSERC will also entertain proposals for Collaborative Mobility Grants that aim to establish new inter-American collaborations, support international mobility and/or support networking efforts between scientists who wish to use their respective existing grants to support their collaborative research work. Value: the maximum allowable requested amount from NSERC for a single project is $60,000 per year, for up to three years.

Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation (MRI): Early Researcher Award program (ERA) Deadlines October 3, 2008 – Draft of NOI for review to Office of Research Services; October 10, 2008 – The Round 5 Notice of Intent (NOI); November 28, 2008 – The Round 5 application deadline
The Early Researcher Award program (ERA) aims to help promising, recently-appointed Ontario researchers build their research teams of graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and research associates. The goal of the program is to improve Ontario’s ability to attract and retain the best and brightest research talent. Value: Each award to a leading researcher is a maximum of $100,000 and must be matched by an additional $50,000 from the researcher’s institution and/or a private sector partner. In addition, up to $40,000 will be provided by the Ministry to the institution for indirect costs.

The 2009/10 India Studies Fellowship Competition (ORS) Deadline June 30, 2008
These fellowships, made possible by the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute, provide travel, research and living allowances to Canadian scholars while they study in India during the 2009-2010 academic year. The objective of these fellowships is to promote understanding of India in Canada. Value:  A monthly living allowance of Rs 19,200, a monthly research stipend of Rs 4,800 and return airfare to India.
